EAI and Informal Communication Processes

Is it possible that in spite of its apparent usefulness, EAI (enterprise application integration) missed a critical element?

I don't like anything with the term EAI in it because a lot of people carry baggage about it - much like 'knowledge management' and 'intranets', it hasn't delivered on its complete promise.

Is it possible that many EAI projects have struggled because they didn't factor in the 'people equation' of application integration? My gut tells me that EAI (to date) has been implemented as a set of very rigid and non-humanistic systems integrations, and probably hasn't given adequate consideration to the existence of informal business communication processes or informal knowledge systems.

I'm not an EAI expert but I deal with lots of companies that use their EAI outcomes on me. I must say (from my vantage point) seemingly integrated systems are very rigid and rarely embrace change or flexibility. Perhaps it's time to consider the duality of EAI (EPI? - enterprise people integration?)
